Project Overview

The Al-Arqawi Factory Solar Steam Project is a real-scale industrial application of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) using Linear Fresnel technology for direct steam generation.

The system replaces a significant portion of fossil fuel consumption by providing clean and reliable solar thermal energy, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Implemented in Jordan, a region with high solar irradiation, the project highlights the strong potential of solar thermal technologies to transform industrial energy systems.

Technology
The system utilizes Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR) technology, where rows of flat mirrors track the sun and concentrate solar radiation onto an elevated receiver.
This concentrated energy is converted into thermal energy, which is then used for direct steam generation. The system is integrated with existing boiler infrastructure, allowing hybrid operation and ensuring continuous steam supply.
Main components include: Linear Fresnel solar collector field, elevated receiver system, direct steam generation unit, thermal piping and heat transfer system, PLC/SCADA control and monitoring, and integration with conventional boilers.

How It Works

Solar Field → Concentration → Steam Generation → Industrial Use

Solar radiation is captured by the mirror field and concentrated onto the receiver. The thermal energy generated is used to produce steam, which is then supplied directly to the factory’s boiler system.
The system operates in hybrid mode with conventional boilers to ensure reliability and continuous operation under all conditions.

Performance

The system delivers consistent and stable performance throughout the year, with peak output during high solar irradiation periods.

It achieves significant reductions in fuel consumption, reaching approximately 145,000 liters of diesel savings annually, while reducing carbon emissions by around 390 tons of CO₂ per year.
The design ensures high availability and operational stability, making it suitable for continuous industrial use.

Economic Impact

Reduces fuel consumption and improves cost predictability.

Environmental Impact

Reduces carbon emissions by approximately 390 tons annually.

Industrial Impact

Ensures reliable steam supply with no disruption to operations.

Innovation

This project demonstrates a practical and scalable approach to industrial heat decarbonization through direct solar-to-steam generation.
By eliminating intermediate energy conversion losses and integrating with existing boiler systems, the project achieves high efficiency, reliability, and immediate fuel savings in a real industrial environment.

Scalability & Replication

The system is modular and adaptable, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications including manufacturing, food processing, textiles, chemicals, and packaging.
It provides a proven and replicable model for solar thermal deployment in regions with high solar irradiation and strong industrial energy demand.

Why This Project Matters

Industrial heat remains one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize. This project demonstrates that solar thermal energy can be successfully implemented as a reliable and cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels in industrial steam generation.
It provides a real-world example of how renewable energy can directly support industrial production while reducing environmental impact.

Conclusion

The Al-Arqawi Factory Solar Steam Project is a proven, scalable solution for sustainable industrial heat—delivering measurable savings, emissions reduction, and reliable performance.
